When most people think of a salon, they imagine the smell of harsh chemicals, loud chatter, and rows of bottles promising instant transformation. For years, that was the only option. But I began to notice something: more and more of us were getting sick, stressed, or simply sensitive to the very products we trusted to make us feel beautiful.
That’s where my journey began. From ethics to survival My journey into holistic wellness in the beauty community started with my stand against animal cruelty in cosmetic testing. I refused to contribute to unnecessary suffering. But things deepened when I began working with cancer patients and women experiencing high-risk pregnancies. Their needs pushed me to find products that were not only ethical, but also safe for vulnerable systems. I started slowly: switching products for cleaner versions, attending seminars, and thanks to an incredible opportunity, working with a chemist who custom-mixed color formulas for me. By the time I developed my own chemical sensitivities, I was already well-versed in this small, overlooked corner of the industry. Pivoting wasn’t easy, but it was possible. The turning point What I wasn’t prepared for was the lack of clean air salon environments. When I developed ammonia poisoning, a cumulative condition that will always be with me, I realized that no traditional salon space would be safe. So, I did something radical: I built my own. At first, it was simply an attempt to desensitize myself and stay in an industry I’d been part of since 1986. I thought, if it doesn’t work out, at least I tried. But when the word got out, I discovered something powerful: I wasn’t alone. There were so many people who hadn’t been able to sit in a salon without leaving sick. By controlling my environment and creating strict air-quality protocols, I not only healed myself enough to live in a somewhat normal rhythm, I also created a safe haven for others. A space born from necessity It turns out, the thing I built to survive became something many others needed too. A space where: • Scalp care is treated like skin care—not an afterthought. • Low-tox color and clean products are the standard, not the exception. • Energy work, including Reiki, supports the inner experience as much as the outer results. Over the years, I’ve learned just as much from the people in my chair as I have from my own journey. Each client has taught me something new about resilience, sensitivity, and the deep human desire to feel beautiful without sacrificing health. Why it matters Holistic hair is about more than shine or style. It’s about creating beauty that’s aligned with your whole being; body, mind, and spirit. In a world that moves fast and rarely gives back, your appointment here becomes a pause, a grounding, a ritual. An invitation This blog will be a place where I share what I’ve learned along the way: • Rituals you can bring home (yes, your scalp deserves one). • Seasonal guidance for keeping your beauty practices in rhythm with the natural cycles. • Stories about products and practices that truly make a difference for sensitive systems. If you’ve ever felt overlooked in a traditional salon or if you’re simply craving a more thoughtful approach to your beauty rituals, I created this space for you. Welcome to the hallowed path of holistic hair. Deirdra
